Etiquette Tip of the Month

Writing a thank-you note

Writing a thank-you note is the best way to show your appreciation for a gift. It is an obligation to the gift-giver, but it doesn’t have to be a chore. Just remember these tips for a proper thank-you note:

Write it and send it off within two weeks, even if you don’t like the gift or can’t use it. Your thank-you note shows your appreciation, not only for the monetary value of the gift, but more importantly, for the gift-giver’s thinking about you, and her time and energy to either make or buy a gift especially for you.
In your thank-you note, don’t forget these three elements:

  • A flat out statement of thank you – make this the first line.
  • Mention the word ‘appreciate’ or ‘thoughtful’ in the note.
  • Mention the gift and how you will use it, wear it, or how you will positively interact with it. Especially in this day and age of electronic communication, a handwritten thank-you note is a personal touch that goes so much further and lasts much longer than a verbal thank you, an email, or a text message.

Program Happenings

Ms. Susan Brooker, Director of Dance Connecticut, gave a lesson on charm and poise to club members. She began with an interesting behind the scenes tour of the building that houses The Hartford Symphony Orchestra, The Connecticut Opera, and Dance Connecticut. Here Ms. Brooker gives the story on one of the major costumes in The Nutcracker production.

Community Involvement

Club members participated in a service-learning project by handcrafting journals and address books for girls just going into foster care. They handcrafted the cover using glitter, ribbons, and a lot of care and consideration for girls going into a strange new home. They added pens, pencils, and a bag of candy for a nice surprise.

A social worker visited club members and asked them about their experience in The Etiquette Club. She thanked the girls for the journals and for their commitment to service. “Great job, girls!”

What Our Clients are Saying

... Dageanna feels proud every time she tells family & friends about dressing proper & baking, etc. I noticed how she wants to set the table, how she sits straight. She takes her time now when she talks, and she even puts the proper words when needed.”

It teaches you how to speak, it made me more independent, responsible, how I talk, oh, actually how I speak, how I dress, how I present myself in front of certain people, how not to look stupid in situations and to use for everyday life.

This club, the etiquette club (Ms. Whitaker) has taught me how to dress on different occasions. Whether business, formal, casual...Even when I’m at home my etiquette skills play a roll when I’m setting the table, making my tea (stirring my tea), I can go on and on. In brief this club has made a physical, and mental change in me from Day one.
